Optimizing images for SEO is crucial for improving your website’s visibility in search engine results, and using the Yoast SEO plugin can make this process much easier if you’re using WordPress. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to optimize images using the Yoast plugin:

  1. Install and Activate Yoast SEO Plugin: If you haven’t already, install and activate the free version of the Yoast SEO plugin on your WordPress website.  Note that all Soundview Creative websites come installed with the plugin.
  2. Upload Your Image: Add the image to your WordPress media library by going to Media > Add New.
  3. Add Alt Text: Alt text (alternative text) provides a textual description of your image, which is important for accessibility and SEO. When you upload or edit an image in WordPress, you’ll find an option to add alt text. Yoast SEO allows you to optimize this alt text for better SEO. Here’s how:
    • After uploading the image, click on it to open its details.
    • You’ll see an option labeled “Alt Text” or “Alternative Text.”
    • Write a concise and descriptive alt text that accurately represents the image and includes relevant keywords. Make sure it describes the image’s content and function.
  4. Optimize Image File Name: Before uploading the image to WordPress, ensure the image file name is descriptive and contains relevant keywords. Yoast SEO will automatically consider this when analyzing your content for SEO. For example, instead of “IMG12345.jpg,” use a filename like “seo-optimized-image.jpg.”
  5. Set Image Title: While not as crucial for SEO as alt text, adding a descriptive title to your image can still provide some SEO benefit. When you upload or edit an image in WordPress, you can set the image title. Yoast SEO will also consider this as part of its analysis.
  6. Optimize Image Size: Large image file sizes can slow down your website, affecting user experience and SEO. Use image compression tools or plugins to optimize your images for the web. While Yoast SEO doesn’t directly handle image compression, optimizing image sizes is an essential part of overall SEO optimization.
  7. Use Image XML Sitemaps: Yoast SEO automatically creates XML sitemaps for your website, including images. This helps search engines discover and index your images more efficiently, improving their chances of appearing in image search results.
  8. Check Yoast SEO Analysis: After publishing or updating your content, Yoast SEO provides an SEO analysis. It will include checks for your images, such as whether they have alt text and appropriate file names. Follow any recommendations provided to improve your image SEO further.

By following these steps and utilizing the features of the Yoast SEO plugin, you can effectively optimize your images to boost your website’s SEO performance.  Get more SEO tips here.
